Frequently Asked Questions

What is an M4A file?

M4A is Apple's audio container format using AAC compression. It's the default format for iPhone Voice Memos, audio books purchased from iTunes, and recordings made in GarageBand. While M4A is excellent quality, it's not universally supported by older devices and some apps.

Why doesn't M4A work on my device or app?

M4A uses the AAC codec inside an MPEG-4 container. While modern browsers and most smartphones support it, some older Android devices, car stereos, podcast platforms, and non-Apple software don't recognize M4A files. MP3 has been around since 1993 and is universally supported everywhere.

Will converting M4A to MP3 reduce quality?

Both M4A (AAC) and MP3 are lossy formats. Converting from one lossy format to another means a second round of compression, which introduces some additional quality loss. At 128kbps or higher, this is barely perceptible. If you need to preserve audio quality, keep the M4A or export as WAV.

Can I convert iPhone Voice Memos with this tool?

Yes. Voice Memos are saved as M4A files on iPhone. Share or AirDrop them to your computer, then drop them into this converter. Chrome and Safari both support M4A decoding on desktop.

Does browser support matter for M4A?

Yes. M4A/AAC decoding is supported in Chrome, Edge, and Safari via the Web Audio API. Firefox has limited AAC support due to codec licensing. If conversion fails in Firefox, try Chrome or Safari.
