iPhone Backup Failed - Not Enough Storage

Going to Apple Store, selling iPhone, or upgrading - but can't backup because Mac is full.

iPhone Backup Failed Not Enough Storage on Mac

Why iPhone Backups Need So Much Space

iPhone backups to Mac require:

  • Full device capacity worth of space (64GB iPhone = 64GB needed)
  • Plus 10-20% extra for temporary files
  • Previous backup isn't deleted until new one succeeds

If you have a 128GB iPhone, you need 140-150GB free on Mac. Most users don't have this much free space.

Quick Solution (20 Minutes)

  1. Delete old backups: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ (can free 30-100GB)
  2. Compress photo/video library: Recovers 50-150GB (see below)
  3. Retry backup: Should succeed now

Permanent Fix

Compress your Mac's media library so you always have space for backups. A 200GB photo/video library compresses to 80-100GB, giving you 100GB+ free space permanently.
